I just posted this photo on my photography blog earlier this morning with the title, “Anatomy of an Eggplant Encaustic Photo Parm” when the bell went off in my head.
It's always about the food. Always.
E.G. Years ago, I caught myself giving driving directions to folks this way: “Take a right at McDonalds, and then just after Krispy Creme take a left. ”
In fact, I think my management of this all-about-the-food issue benefited from turning the obsessive qualities of food into a practical application OTHER than eating.
I began to photograph food, and in particular, foods I didn't like to eat, like vegetables and fruits. As a photographer, I had to admit that they were interesting photo subjects- colorful, shapely, altogether amazing from the outside.
So, I began there. Let me appreciate these “dreaded” objects for their photographic values and maybe I'll eat more of them.
Mission accomplished. Now, when I give directions, I say “Take a right at “Whole Foods” and then a left at the town common where the Farmer's Market is on Fridays.”
It's still about the food, just different food.
